What defines a “healthy person”? Is it the food they eat, the fitness program they maintain, or the way that they manage stress? The truth is that there is no singular shift in your life that will transform you into a healthy person. A holistically healthy lifestyle requires intentional daily decisions in various aspects of life.
Taking care of your health is one of the most important things one can do to ensure a happy and successful life. While our genes do play a part in defining our well-being, the majority of our physical and emotional well-being is determined by the choices we make on a day-to-day basis. Regardless of the cards you were dealt, there are plenty of ways that you can improve your life through dedication to your values and goals. Below are five practices that healthy people do regularly for you to adopt into your own life to improve your overall well-being. Regular Exercise Maintaining a healthy body and mind requires physical activity. Exercise not only aids in weight loss and muscle growth but also improves mood, eases tension and anxiety, and lowers our risk of illness. Believe it or not, exercise is just as good for your brain as it is for your body. Physical activity is a great way to start off your morning in a good mindset or to use as an afternoon pick-me-up when you feel yourself getting tired. A minimum of 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity exercises is advised by the American Heart Association. Some examples of these exercises include brisk walking, cycling, or swimming. In addition, at least two days of the week should be dedicated to strength training exercises to increase muscle strength and endurance. Whether it is a short walk with a friend, a long relaxing evening yoga or even a quick core class, moving your body daily has an incredible impact on your overall well being.
Balanced Diet
Another essential habit of healthy people is a balanced diet. Do you remember that colorful food group plate you learned about in elementary school health class? This is the way you should look at your daily consumption of food and beverage. A varied intake of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats make up a nutritious diet. Even with dietary restrictions, it is imperative to make sure that you are fueling yourself sufficiently in all of these categories. In addition to eating healthier, limiting the consumption of processed foods, added sugars, saturated fats, and trans fats is also crucial. At the end of the day a slice of pizza or a sweet treat on a special occasion won’t immediately make you unhealthy. However, it is important to make intentional daily choices that positively impact your overall well being. A balanced diet helps the body get the nutrients it needs, maintain a sustainable weight, and lower the chance of developing chronic illness. Proper Sleep A healthy lifestyle also depends on getting adequate sleep. Sleep supports physical healing and renewal while also enhancing mental well-being. Our bodies and brains need to rest in order to refuel and rejuvenate for all of the activities that we participate in throughout the day. Lack of sleep can result in fatigue, impaired cognitive ability, and a compromised immune system, increasing our susceptibility to illness. According to studies, adults need between seven and nine hours of sleep per night, but children and teenagers require even more. The quality of your sleep matters too! Sleep quality can be improved by developing a regular sleep pattern and a calming nighttime routine. This routine should consist of relaxing activities, self-care and especially time away from your electronics.
Stress Management
Learning to manage your stress is another essential skill to keeping your health in good shape. Prolonged stress can cause physical health issues such as heart disease and high blood pressure as well as mental health issues such as anxiety and depression. High levels of stress can also result in cognitive difficulties, behavioral changes and even sleep problems. As you can see, every part of the healthy lifestyle recipe is important. There are a variety of coping mechanisms offered to manage stress and everyone has their own preferences. Some effective ways to handle stress include exercise, meditation, yoga, deep breathing, and time in nature. Another crucial aspect of stress management is developing boundaries and exercising the ability to refuse stressful activities in your life. Social Connection The final vital component of a healthy lifestyle is social interaction. Strong social ties can lower stress, enhance well-being generally, and promote mental health. Although it may seem like a healthy lifestyle has to be strictly regimented and absent of fun or good foods, this is far from the truth. Challenging yourself in your health goals goes hand in hand with pushing yourself out of your comfort zone and creating meaningful connections. Social relationships may be cultivated through group activities, including volunteer work, team sports, and neighborhood gatherings. Simply staying in touch with loved ones daily via phone conversations, emails, and video chats is essential to your physical and mental well being.
