Have you ever paid attention to how you feel after you eat certain foods? What you eat can have a significant impact on your mood. Personally, I’ve noticed that foods dense in carbs send me into what I call a “carb coma”. They give me energy immediately, but I quickly crash and always end up feeling drained. I remember one time after eating a big New York-style bagel, I almost fell asleep driving back home to New Jersey; I had to pull over.

As the leaves change colors and the air turns crisp, it’s almost as if you’re surrounded by the warm scent of pumpkins and apples in the air. Fall is officially here. While pumpkin spice lattes and apple pies topped with ice cream might not be the healthiest options – there are plenty of ways to incorporate the best foods that this season has to offer into your diet without compromising your health goals. The fall season brings with it a delightful array of fresh, locally grown produce that can add both flavor and nutrition to your table. Here are just some examples of fall seasonal produce you should snap up from your local farmers market this weekend to create your own fall “farm to table” experience.

In today’s society, there is a lot of buzz about sustainability. Many of us have an incentive to keep rapidly consuming and no incentive to stop. If everyone else gets to keep living in this fast-paced, materialistic world, why can’t I? The issue is, if everybody thought this way, we would very quickly have no Earth left to live on. In fact, if everybody lived like most U.S. residents, we would need the resources of 5 Earths to keep up with our ecological footprint. So, yes. Living sustainably matters.

Fall is known for its festive drinks. It seems like you can get “pumpkin spice” just about anything these days! After that comes winter, when we’ll be overwhelmed with sugar plum, warm vanilla, and caramel brulée flavored everything as well! As much as we all fantasize about our favorite fall drinks keeping us warm in the cold, they can contain crazy amounts of added sugar and calories. We don’t need more of that.

After studies in the 1950s showed that diets with increased levels of saturated fats were more likely to cause heart disease, saturated fats got a bad name and they took down all types of fat with them. People continued to avoid all fats after learning that they were more calorie-dense than carbohydrates. However, more recent and reliable research suggests that unsaturated fats lead to a healthier and more sustainable life.
